EATING DISORDERS |
|
For most people, eating is a pleasant part of life which is vitally important for good physical and mental well-being. If food is used as a way to cope with problems in our life, this can result in an eating disorder, a disease that can lead to severe illnesses or death.
Anorexia Nervosa is a complex disorder characterized by self-starvation to achieve severe weight loss. Bulimia involves frequent episodes of eating large amounts of food followed by vomiting and/or abuse of laxatives. Both anorexia and bulimia are serious conditions in which eating becomes a nightmare of guilt with a constant struggle for self-control.
The treatment for those with eating disorders includes group and individual counseling to help people feel better about themselves and overcome their problems. If you are concerned about a friend, family member, or yourself suffering from an eating disorder, seek help from your parents, school counselor, teacher, or local mental health agency.
