WIC

Women, Infants, and Children Supplemental Food Program or WIC is a nutrition education program.  WIC provides highly nutritious supplemental foods which promote good health for pregnant and postpartum women, breastfeeding mothers, infants and children up to five years of age.  Services are free and funding is through Federal Grant Funds.

Mission Statement:  To improve health status and prevent health problems among Ohio’s at-risk women, infants, and children.  Good nutrition, starting with pregnancy, will provide the best possible start for babies and children to grow up strong and healthy.

Services:

· Nutrition education

· Referrals for health care

· Immunization screening and referral

· Breastfeeding support

· Supplemental foods: milk, cheese, cereal, juice, eggs, peanut butter, beans, infant formula.  Tuna and carrots for breast-feeding women.

Benefits of being enrolled in the WIC program include:

· Nutrition education for yourself and your children.

· Nutritious foods at no cost.

· You save money

· Saved money can be used to purchase fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, baby foods, and other foods WIC does not provide.

 

Eligibility:

· Pregnant mothers, OR

· Breastfeeding mothers, OR

· Women who have a baby less than six months old, OR

· Infants and children up to five years of age, AND

· Resident of Auglaize County, AND

· Considered medical or nutritional risk, AND

· Meet Income Guidelines (See chart)

 

Application Procedures:  Make an appointment with a WIC Health Professional.  If eligible, you will receive coupons to buy nutritious foods at local stores.
